InterfaceFLOR

Interface helpers put in a tremendous effort

Organisers of the day InterfaceFLOR Sustainability Group and Wollondilly Shire Council celebrate their acheivement
InterfaceFLOR manufacture and supply commercial carpet tiles (floorcoverings). They have an inhouse sustainability group which decided to get involved with Tree Day as a way to engage with the local community in helping the environment.
After logging onto the Planet Ark website and registering as a site coordinator, they contacted the local council to see if they could find a tree planting site that was suitable. Wollondilly Shire Council in conjunction with Wollondilly Community Nursery offered assistance in hosting the event, providing native plants and a BBQ on the day.
The tree planting was held along the edge of the Stonequarry Creek in Picton Botancial Gardens. The planting will help stop erosion and encourage wild life back to the area, assist native plants to grow and contribute to the implementation of a vegetation management plan. As well as the tree planting they organised a jumping castle, face painting and a sausage sizzle for all volunteers on the day. There were even T-Shirts and showbags!
"The day was an overwhelmingly great success. We managed to plant 510 trees within an hour and a half and unfortunately our back up trees weren't available or we could have planted many many more, although we spent the rest of the day watering in plants and fixing any that hadn't been planted properly."
"InterfaceFLOR were supported by many people from our local community and InterfaceFLOR staff which made the day very special and worthwhile. With the support of approx 30 local businesses we were also able to provide 200 showbags and t-shirts on the day plus prize give aways ranging from $25 gift vouchers to a 500 litre Rainwater Tank donated by Derks Pet Supplies on Argyle."
- Charlene Cartes, InterfaceFLOR Sustainability Group Chairperson
To promote the event InterfaceFLOR sent flyers out through all the local schools, put signs up in local shopping centres and shops and put flyers in some shops to be handed out. Major sponsor and contributor to our day was Derks Pet Supplies on Argyle, they sent flyers out with all of their newsletters and assisted by handing out flyers and encouraging all of their clientelle. Council and Interface have run stories in the local newspapers and local radio station C91.3 plugged the day on their news bulletins. They even sent their road crew out on the day to give away freebies and give us a live plug.
InterfaceFLOR's environmental charter can be summed up in two words - Mission Zero,
"Our promise is to eliminate any negative impact our company may have on the environment by the year 2020."
