On Friday 1st September 2006 Yarrawonga Public School students from grades 3 and 4 spent a busy few hours planting native trees and bushes. They worked with South Yarrawonga Landcare and North East Waters at the Water Treatment Plant.

A busload of 70 students arrived at 10am. They learnt about the importance of this particular planting:

  • to provide a corridor for animals and birds to move safely between the remnant stands of trees
  • to provide native habitat for the endangered Grey Crown Babbler

Landcare gave a planting demonstration and the students planted, watered, and positioned tree guards. The kids were naturally very motivated and set off with great gusto! The procedure was then repeated with a second busload of 50 students. An Australia Post / Junior Landcare Biodiversity Grant paid for the buses.

The whole morning ran very smoothly due to the planning and help from both Landcare and North East Waters. A wonderful morning was had by all. Everyone left feeling satisfied to have helped the environment. North East Wasters were so impressed they'd like to do something similar next year.
